To play Lament, you need exactly two things: an Internet connection and a telnet client. Most older OSes come with a telnet program (on PCs it tends to have the descriptive name of telnet.exe), but newer systems have been moving away from it for security reasons. The solution to this is to invest in a third-party client. There are a great many clients for a great many OSes available, some of which are listed on our links page. The curious first-time player is encouraged to read up on whichever client they think fits them best; MUD client documentation written by the coders themselves will be far more useful in installing and setting up the program than vague guesses on a game's webpage. port number: 8600 If you have connected successfully, you will see our login banner and a prompt asking for your account name. Type "new" to create your own. Lament uses account names to organize characters, and your account name is what will appear when you speak over channels and what staff will see when you log in, log out, submit a bug, etc. Be sure you pick something you'd be happy with using for the long term! While we highly suggest setting your e-mail address when prompted, this is entirely optional. If you ever need the automailer to reset your password, it will use whatever e-mail is provided. Should you have account issues and not have an address set, you will need to contact the current head of Public Relations for assistance. Their name and contact information is kept up-to-date on our forum. Our character generation process is fairly straightforward and involves multiple stages of entering bits of data (such as a character's name or birthdate) and picking options from the provided list. You can back up a step at any time and as many times as you wish. Feel free to ask for advice on our channels, as well! When you finish creating a character you will begin in whichever city you selected, complete with fluency in the local language. From there you are free to develop and play as you please: there are no levels or classes in Lament, so you can set your own goals to achieve in the game. We hope you enjoy your stay, however long or short it may be! |
