A Loa Saray goblin flaunts her favorite machete. The shortest and lightest inhabitants of the world of Lament are the goblins. Covered in scales, with shocks of hair (often of more than one color) sprouting between their batlike ears, these child-sized creatures are sometimes mistaken for jungle wildlife or swamp monsters; appropriately enough, many of them live in some of the most inhospitable corners of the earth, often preferring a nocturnal lifestyle. They come in assorted shades of brown and green with large, brightly-colored eyes.

Goblins have slitted eyes well-suited for seeing by moonlight, reptilian nostril slits in place of fleshy noses, and wide mouths filled with teeth. Their heads are proportionally large for their bodies. Their three-toed feet are slightly webbed; their fingers usually are not. While a goblin does have claws, they are so small and blunt as to be useless in combat. The average member of this species can eat just about anything and often will.

Goblins are the most magically-inclined species alive today, though few places in the world are inclined towards encouraging this particular trait. They also have quick, inquisitive minds--though they tend to be light on common sense and self-preservation--and equally quick fingers. The average goblin has a very short attention span and has trouble focusing on tasks for extended periods of time. A goblin's size is also a disadvantage, as their slight frames limit their strength and fleetness of foot. Given enough time, rest, and food, a goblin can increase their general good health to recover from horrific maiming, up to and including regrowing a severed limb.

The goblin population is highest in Loa Saray, though many are found in Liidhaga and Aiseweg, as well.
