Updates

The following is the record of public game progress for June 14th, 2024 through August 31st, 2024.

  • New/updated helpfiles: apply, check, discard, healing
  • New items: burn ointment
  • It is now possible to acquire burn ointment, which can be added to a bandage via the "apply ointment to bandage" syntax. Burn ointment heals heat damage, such as burns from fires, on the limb to which the bandage is applied. Medicated bandages can heal burns on crippled limbs even without applying a splint, though this is far less effective than if the limb was splinted. If a bandage has medicine on it, the medicine can be noticed by looking at the bandage (if the bandage has not yet been put on someone) or smelling it (which works whether or not it's being used), though it requires either first aid or herb lore to recognize medicine after it's been applied. Burn ointment can be both bought and sold in hospices.
  • The "check" command now accepts "check clutter" and "check light" as valid syntaxes. The "check clutter" syntax will produce a message showing the amount of clutter in a room, with a separate message for if the room isn't yet in a cluttered state; these messages are the same as those in room descriptions and are intended as a spam-reduction and accessibility option. The "check light" syntax will produce a message showing the room's current light level, as well as an additional bit of text mentioning whether or not they can read, write, or craft with the current illumination; like "check clutter," this is intended as a spam-reduction and accessibility option. Other "check" syntaxes are unaffected.
  • The "discard" command now recognizes "break" as a syntax; if used on a target that yields other items when broken (such as eggs or clay pots), and the target is not set to resist the command, the target will break into its leftover results. If the target doesn't have broken results, or is proofed against instant destruction, it will check for "discard" validity as usual.
  • It is now possible to dismantle crafted kilns, losing the mud and wood used in their construction but reclaiming some of the stone. Existing kilns may be updated using the "exchange" command to make it possible to take them apart. Similar to dismantling forges and smelting furnaces, this only works on kilns crafted by hand, not those coded to be part of an area.
  • Logging trees now has extra sanity checks to help prevent players from trapping themselves in too-full rooms. This first checks to see if there's at least a quarter of the room's total capacity remaining, similar to mining, then sees if a potential fallen tree would be too big for the current room. If a fallen tree would be too big, a message will be displayed and the potential tree will be deleted. Resuming cutting down a tree in progress that would be too full for the room also uses this second check, but in this case the tree will remain where it is to give players a chance to clear some room without losing their work.
  • Trying to skin a corpse with a single object embedded in it now properly checks for free hands, and will stop itself if a lack of free hands has prevented the dislodging attempt. Corpses with two or more things embedded in them behave as usual.
